We Are Pilots.

We Are Pilots.: A video series I conceived and created about women who fly paragliders (work in progress).

At a popular free flight film festival I realized that there were zero women pilots represented on-screen. I wanted to change that, so I immediately went out and bought a GoPro camera with the intention of submitting a film for the next festival.

I had never created a film before, nor done any significant video recording – particularly of interviews. I taught myself Premiere Pro and learned a lot about bad sound recording: particularly what could (and couldn’t) be done to fix it in Soundbooth. (The following year I purchased an external microphone!)

I interviewed women pilots wherever I went, and collected footage from those who wanted to participate but were too far away. With the time limit imposed by the festival guidelines the first film was more of an introduction to the diversity of women who fly. So I started working on a second film, which turned into a 3-part episode and shown as an extended trailer at the subsequent film festival.

Best Paragliding Film at the NorCal Free Flight Film Festival V (NCFF5): “We are Pilots. Two”

My goal for the series is to include a lot more in-flight footage. However, it is a challenge to film in the air while flying (particularly if flying in a competition or other challenging conditions). It’s good to have goals!
