CART RaceViewer

CART RaceViewer: Online live coverage of CART motor races in the context of a broadband technology trial.

Overall management of the design and development of “RaceViewer” software that assembled, presented, and allowed the audience to interact with a live CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams) experience. This was a showcase of new broadband technology.

Helium had a close relationship with Quokka Sports, providing interaction design, custom software development, and complex project management expertise. Our first live-event project was a proof of concept, live race viewing experience bringing together bleeding-edge technology from various Intel partners: Echostar provided broadband connectivity via satellite, connected to Gateway equipment in trial participant’s homes, where they watched a new type of sports-viewing experience from Quokka Sports. The project required both traditional project management processes (working with a diverse group of development teams), along with new approaches for ensuring a meaningful, working product on race day (no slips!).

Imagine outsourcing one or more of the most critical components of your company’s work, the most challenging technical, organizational or design tasks. Now imagine sleeping at night after doing so. That pretty well describes Quokka’s relationship with Helium. – Michael Gough, Chief Creative Officer, Quokka Sports, Inc.

The project proved the potential of new, high-bandwidth internet experiences (along with confirming the capabilities of all the hardware partners), launching Quokka Sports’ ongoing coverage of CART motor racing events, along with a variety of other live action sports. It also established Helium’s live event coverage custom experience process, leveraged for a variety of projects and leading Quokka to hire all members of Helium.
